Embed is a regulated Payment Service Provider (PSP) for Vertical SaaS Platforms. Backed by tier-1 investors, we are a start-up with ambitious goals and a team of payments experts. Our mission is to enable platforms to embed payments seamlessly, handling the end-to-end payments infrastructure, compliance, and risk management for our merchants.

We put particular emphasis on harnessing new technologies such as AI, and we are free from the cumbersome constraints often found in larger corporations, empowering our team to innovate rapidly.

How will you make an impact?

As our Legal & Compliance Intern focusing on financial law and fintech, you will play a key role in supporting our compliance and regulatory initiatives. In addition to traditional legal responsibilities, you will help develop innovative procedures to onboard new merchants, speed up transaction monitoring, and explore the use of cutting-edge technologies—particularly AI—to elevate our processes. You will be working at the intersection of EU rules and regulations (especially in financial services and payments) and the rapidly expanding world of fintech, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in a dynamic startup environment.

Responsibilities

Research & Analysis

Conduct comprehensive research into relevant EU and Dutch financial regulations (e.g., PSD2, AML directives) and data protection laws (GDPR) to ensure Embed’s compliance in all aspects of merchant onboarding and transaction monitoring.

Merchant Onboarding

Help devise and refine procedures for onboarding new merchants—this includes KYC checks, contract reviews, and regulatory compliance assessments, leveraging modern technologies to make the process both efficient and compliant.

Transaction Monitoring

Work closely with the compliance team to develop and improve transaction monitoring procedures, seeking out innovative tools and AI-driven solutions to enhance speed and accuracy.

Regulatory Compliance

Dive deep into evolving EU and Dutch rules, regulations, and guidelines that impact payments and fintech, and assist in translating them into actionable internal policies that empower the business.Policy Development &

Optimization

Collaborate on revising and creating policies, ensuring we remain agile and innovative without compromising legal and regulatory standards.

Ad-hoc Legal & Compliance Support

Assist the legal team with contract reviews, project-related assessments, and ongoing regulatory obligations that might arise as Embed continues to grow.

Experience & Skills

• Dutch Law Master Student: Currently enrolled in (or advanced in) a master’s program, with a focus on financial law or a strong interest in fintech/financial regulation.

• Fintech & AI Interest: Demonstrated passion for fintech, emerging payment technologies, and exploring how AI can streamline complex processes.

• Regulatory Savviness: Willingness and ability to dive deep into relevant EU and Dutch regulations to interpret and apply them effectively in a fast-paced environment.

• Analytical & Detail-Oriented: Excellent research and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail. Not trying to Google your way out of complex topics, but keen to understand the heart of the matter.

• Communication & Collaboration: Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills in both Dutch and English. Able to work well in a diverse, cross-functional environment.

• Ownership & Drive: Comfortable in a startup setting where you can take charge of projects and see them through to implementation, unhampered by rigid corporate policies.

We are looking to expand our  Legal & Compliance team with a driven, legally minded individual who is eager to help us refine and evolve our merchant onboarding, transaction monitoring, and regulatory compliance strategies.

This is a 3–6 month internship on a full-time basis, with the possibility of extension. We require a minimum availability of 3 months. The preferred start date is July 2025 (flexible).
